History of Spanx
Founded in 2000 by Sara Blakely in Atlanta, Georgia, her future entrepreneurial success in shapewear began from a problem that many women face everyday. This problem was visible panty lines showing from ill-fitting pants. Frustrated with this problem and the failed attempts of wearing other shapewear available to her at the time, Sara got a brilliant and simple solution to her problem with her own style of shapewear by simply cutting off the feet of pantyhose and wearing them under her pants. Not only did this idea work well to hide any unsightly lines but her shapewear also made her figure look better than she could have imagined.
With this small spark, the evolution of Spanx shapewear began. Sara decided to follow her gut, even when others told her it wouldn't work, and took $5,000 of her own money to create a prototype of her brilliant product. She knew it would be a success and pushed forward to make her vision come true.
Once her prototype was created, she quickly got to work on the brand name and packaging that would really make people's heads turn. Working in her one bedroom apartment, she soon got the idea of SPANX with its ultra bright red packaging.
Since Sara's background was in sales, her skills quickly went into high gear when she approached big names like Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus to promote and sell her product. When they agreed, the sales quickly started to take off and even got the attention of a big name like Oprah. Once featured on the Oprah Show, Sara's shining star took off and has never looked back.
With media coverage on major news show, talk shows and articles featured in top magazine and newspapers, the name Spanx was heard all over North America and now the rest of the world.
