Tankinis were created in the 1980s and have gotten more popular ever since. Some women like it because they can buy a top and bottom separately, which is great if you wear different sizes in your bust and bottom areas.
Depending on the style of the tank top of a tankini, it might still show a little of the midriff, but most go down past the waist and go clear down to the bottom half's waistband or hip area. The bottom part can sport different types of leg openings such as boy shorts, swim shorts, low cut bikini, high cut bikini, or G-string back.
The tankini also comes in a wide variety of colors and designs. You can also sometimes find tankinis with a ruched top, which is great if you want to minimise your waistline, as ruching is very slimming. Some tankinis also have built in bras for more support.
The tankini has been especially welcoming to women with long torsos who found one piece suits too short for them to wear. It's also much more comfortable than some other styles of bathing suits. Plus, it provides more security than a bikini top in that it won't fall off so easy, especially if the wearer is playing sports like beach volleyball or something that requires jumping around a lot.
Depending on a person's body styles, tankinis may or may not be flattering. If a woman is very curvy, she may want to pick a tankini that has a maximum area of coverage; otherwise parts of their body may hang out and not be very attractive.
Tankinis are a great choice for children too, and come in many different styles, colours and fabrics for little girls of all ages.
