One Piece Swimwear: Timeless Style for All Body Types

The one piece swimsuit has been a mainstay of women's swimwear design since the mid 19th century however early swimsuit designs were garments which are very different from the one piece swimsuit we know and love today. The original one piece swimsuit covered a woman's body from ankle to neck, as the attitudes of the time insisted on modesty and decorum. Fabrics were stiff and wearer's usually made their own swimming costumes.

It was not until 1907 that the one piece swimsuit began to transform into a more practical and revealing garment. Australian performer Annette Kellerman was touring the United States, and found that the typical one piece swimwear of the time restricted her movements in the water. Kellerman was famously arrested for wearing a new style of one piece swimwear which, although covering much of her body, was closely fitted to reveal the female form. As more revealing swimwear designs became more acceptable, the one piece swimsuit came into its heyday. During the 1940s and 1950s, glamour photography featured beautiful, curvaceous women wearing dramatic bathing costumes, and set a standard for the world of swimwear fashion.

Today, one piece swimwear is still a popular choice for women of all ages and body types. The greater coverage that one piece swimwear provides makes it possible for a woman to enhance or hide her shape, making this a flattering option for anyone wishing to hit the beach or pool. The addition of a kaftan or sarong and sandals give this beachwear a relaxed resort wear look.

Make A Style Statement with a One Piece Swimsuit

The modern one piece swimsuit can be as modest or revealing as you like. The different cuts of one piece swimwear on offer mean that you can choose from styles including plunge and halter-neck necklines, boyleg briefs, moulded or under-wire bra, bandeau, cut-away, skirted or body-shaping designs. Specialised one-pieces include mastectomy and large cup swimwear designs.

Colour and pattern wise the world is your oyster! Bright colours are a hot fashion choice, and can be chosen to suit your complexion and show off your tan. Shimmer fabrics add an exotic touch to your look, while bold summery floral prints are ideal if you want to be the centre of attention when you hit the beach or pool. Vintage inspired looks which give a nod in the direction of those 50s glamour girls in their retro swimwear are also a major fashion story this season - playful and charming with lots of polka dots or classic stripes, with large brimmed sun hat and sunglasses to complete the look.
